Jupiter History

The area of Jupiter, while known now as a vacation hotspot and fine residential community, also has a history of being an essential part of Florida’s exploration and development. The coast of Jupiter happens to be one of the area’s most unique qualities. The shoreline of the area protrudes father out into the Atlantic Ocean than any other point of Florida’s coastline, making it a key location for early sea-goers and travelers, a tradition that continues to this very day.

In the 1800’s, Jupiter’s most recognized landmark, The Jupiter Lighthouse, was built along this area’s pivotal coastline. The land that the lighthouse now stands upon—an area known as Lighthouse Park—used to be part of Fort Jupiter and used to protect the town during the Seminole Indian Wars.

Early settler life in Jupiter was centered on the Loxahatchee River and the Jupiter inlet, relying on the access to the ocean and plentiful bounty of food and materials from these water bodies to survive. Life in modern Jupiter is somewhat similar; much of the city’s economy and activity comes from the fun and adventure to be found on these local waterways. When the Intracoastal Waterway was deepened in 1929, the fluctuating Jupiter Inlet finally settled itself and no longer continued cycles of opening and closing itself thus preventing access. Jupiter then began to revolve its economy around the logging of pine and cypress, citrus growth and fishing.

These was the era of steam ships along the water and rail cars throughout the land, connecting Jupiter’s goods and people all across the country. Today’s Jupiter is still very much reliant on the beautiful beaches and refreshing waters that inhabit its region, used more for excitement and tourism than anything else.
